Tips For Maintaining A Healthy Lawn In Summer

Updated: Nov 27

With climate change happening all around us, it's important that we adapt to the ever-changing weather patterns occurring nowadays. Maintaining a lush lawn in the summer can be particularly challenging due to drier conditions and increased temperatures. However, with the right strategies, you can keep your lawn healthy and vibrant. Below is a list of several tips for maintaining a lush lawn, despite the dryer conditions you might experience during the summer season.

Preparation

Preparation is arguably the most important piece in having a lush, healthy lawn during spring, summer, and fall. Getting a head start is ideal for easier maintenance during the warm and dryer season. Preparation should take place in the early spring and late fall seasons. Preparation is done by the clearing of debris (E.g. dead grass i.e: thatching, rocks, branches, leaves, etc.) and leveling of the ground. However, it can also be done during the summer season if you find yourself starting later.

Tip 1 - Dethatching

Thatched grass

Dethatching is the process of removing dead grass and debris. Not all grass seed will stay alive during the full duration of a season -- this is a completely natural process. Dethatching can be accomplished by thoroughly raking grassy areas, or by using dethatching equipment. Not only will dethatching remove the yellowish grass that can tarnish the look of your lawn, it also creates a light process aeration. The benefit of aeration is that it improves soil drainage, reduces soil compaction, enhances the absorption of nutrients, water, and oxygen by grassroots.

Tip 2 - Soil Conditioning

Soil conditioning is the process of improving soil quality which enhances the support of proper plant growth, which fertilization is included in this process. Soil is the foundation for successful grass seed rooting and growth. Conditioning soil offers a plethora of benefits; here are just a few:

  • Improves Soil Structure

  • Enhances Water Retention

  • Balances Soil pH

  • Improves Soil Aeration

  • Suppresses Plant Diseases

  • Increases Microbial Activity

"How do I condition my soil?"

There are several ways to properly condition soil. Conducting a soil test first will allow you the understanding of what your soil lacks. It is recommended to use more natural methods, rather than synthetic products. Using natural methods provide a safe and sustainable environment for not only your family and pets, but also creates an optimal biome habitat for your soil. Using synthetic products can make your soil reliant on them which if not properly maintained, it can kill off grass and surrounding plants. Below are several natural fertilization methods for soil conditioning:

Compost: Decomposed organic matter enriches soil with nutrients and beneficial microorganisms. You can compost yourself or purchase compost matter from your local gardening store.

*Note: For store bought compost, reading the labels on the bag can provide insight on how the compost was produced and where it came from. Some brands provide better composting habits than others.

Manure: Animal waste is rich in nutrients and thus a great natural fertilizer.

*Note: It should be well-aged to avoid burning plants.

Worm Castings: Worm excreta enriches soil with nutrients and beneficial microbes. This is produced by earthworm waste.

Green Manure: This is plants that are grown specifically to be plowed back into the soil, adding organic matter and nutrients by decomposing.

Bone Meal: Ground animal bones rich in phosphorus, promoting root development.

Fish Emulsion: Liquid fertilizer made from fish remains, providing a quick nutrient boost.

Seaweed: Provides a broad range of nutrients and trace elements, enhancing soil health.

Biochar: Charred organic matter that enhances soil fertility and carbon sequestration.

Iron: Iron promotes a deep green color in plants, enhances photosynthesis, and corrects iron chlorosis in soils deficient in iron.

*Note: Iron can be purchased in a liquid or granular form.

Tip 3 - Planting New Grass Seed

Over the duration of the summer season, yellow patches may occur. Whether its from heavy foot traffic, pet urination, or the natural process of dying grass seed, you will need to replant grass seed at some point. Grass seed can be the success or demise of a lush, green lawn. While the type of grass seed may seem insignificant in the grand scheme of lawn care, it plays a crucial role in determining the health, appearance, and maintenance requirements of your lawn. Check out my comprehensive guide on Understanding Grass Seed Types For Beginners.

After knowing and purchasing the proper grass seed, a process called "overseeding" should take place. Don't worry, overseeding is simple; follow my 5 Simple Step.

Tip 4 - Mowing Correctly

Mowing your lawn at the proper length will allow continuous and healthy green growth of the grass stem. Cutting grass too short can cause stress on the grass, reduces root growth, and can increase weed susceptibility. Cutting grass too long can produce uneven growth, reduces air circulation, and can increase chances of pests which leads to lawn disease. Mowing your lawn at the proper length not only promotes healthy green growth but also makes your lawn look perfectly manicured.

Tip 5 - Watering Effectively

Proper hydration is essential for a lush, healthy lawn. Watering deeply and infrequently can usually provide proper hydration, but understanding your grass seed type will ultimately give you the best knowledge of the right watering amounts. It is also recommended not to water at night.

Overwatering can cause severe damage root structure, leach nutrients out of the soil, and so on. Underwatering results in a lack of moisture supply to the soil biome, leading to the death of grass and plants. Developing a proper watering schedule based on your grass type and climate will ensure a healthy lawn.

Conclusion

Maintaining a lush, green lawn during the summer months requires a bit of extra effort, but the results will speak for itself. By implementing these tips, you can ensure your lawn remains vibrant and healthy despite the heat. Remember to focus on techniques that enhance soil health and resilience; this will support your lawn through the demanding summer season and beyond. With consistent care and attention, your summer lawn will not only survive but thrive, providing a beautiful and inviting outdoor space for you to enjoy all season long.

Happy gardening!
